Ask S2C: Controlling your thoughts

Hiya Sold to Christ...

1. How does one do this?! @ Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalt itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"

Please can you help expatiate on the above.. This was an Apt read.. But i need to know how you did the above. Please assist.. and oh yeah.. worry not.. I always see your response. Thanks.

Sometime ago, two questions were posted in the comment section from this Post.

With the permission of the person who asked it, (Yeah! we had a loooong dm chat on the subject matter)  i decided to answer the first part here.
The Post was about Self Control and i highlighted several instances where one may struggle for control. These included our thoughts and i was of the opinion that thoughts can be controlled by "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalt itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" as provided for in 2 Corinthans 10:5.
Hence the question.

And here's my answer.

Thanks a lot for your comment. I am happy that you felt the need to ask me to expatiate.
Concerning your first question, you have to understand that as human beings, we cannot stop thinking. God created us to think. Whether we like it or not, thoughts spring up in our mind frequently.

Now! as a Christian, this thoughts ought to be happy, encouraging and Godly thoughts.
Phillipians 4;3 enjoins us to think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable, excellent and worthy of praise.

For example " I can do this" , "I can achieve this". "I will achieve this". "God will do this for me'.
Thoughts of our future, of Heaven, of making impact, of doing good.

However, this is not always the case. Sometimes the devil likes to bring ungodly, dirty, evil, discouraging, outright depressing thoughts from the pit of hell in the vein of "I/You cannot do this" "I/You will have an accident" " What if i fail this exam" "What if someone close to me will die" "God doesn't love you" "God cannot answer your prayers" "The blood of Jesus cannot wash your sins away"  " what if i die now" " etc.

Imagine oh! You are sitting down 'jejely' minding your business and thoughts like that comes to our minds.
Thoughts that have no business in a Christian's mind.
It could even be thoughts about sex, revenge,  pornography or any form of evil.

As Christians, who know their power and authority as children of God, we should not allow those thoughts an extra second.
Even when someone close to you voices out their own negative thought, Bring it into captivity by nullifing them immediately with the word of God and watch that thought flee.
Delay is dangerous.

Do not underestimate the power of your thoughts.
Depression and Suicide often take root from not dealing with these thoughts when they started as small whispered thoughts before becoming large voices.
Eating Disorders, Feelings of inadequacy, Loneliness, No Self Confidence, Sadness all first start out as thoughts.
It is important to bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. That means we battle those thoughts immediately by rendering it null and void. It means that any kind of thought that is anti God should be quickly stamped down.

As i explained it in the Sunday School Class i teach, that first thought is the devil trying to
see if there is space in your head. If you dwell on that thought, Satan quickly moves in and then makes space for even more dire thoughts, and then he works at making those thoughts become reality.

Beloved! what you do with that first thought matters a lot.

I was on my way home from work one day, when a car missed us narrowly. For some reason, i imagined if the car had run into us and i ended up in hospital seriously wounded, i imagined the reactions of my family, i imagined people coming to visit me in the hospital.  I allowed myself linger on that thought instead of canceling it immediately with the blood of Jesus.
Few minutes after, we had an accident, and barely escaped hitting a young boy selling pepper who dashed across the road suddenly. I was luckily enough to sustain only a small injury.  Read the testimony Here.
What do you think happened? My lingering thought on accidents had opened a gateway for accidents.

We cast down imaginations (yours and anyone else's) and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God with the sword of the spirit which is the word of God, with prayer and with the help of the Holy Spirit.
To bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ is to cancel and rebuke any thought ( yours and anyone else's) that does not conform to the word of God, the promise of God concerning your life or God's standard.

This is because this thoughts can come by in very quick succession sometime and vary in subject matter.
And as i said above and in that post, the good thing is that our thoughts can be controlled, using the weapon of the word of God.
For example, when a thought like " what if i die on this journey " comes, nullify it with "Satan, you are a liar, i shall not die, i shall live to declare the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Deal with that thought that tells you that you are ugly and no body will ever want you by countering it with " I am beautiful because i am made in God's image. I am fearfully and wonderfully made".
Be assertive. Deal with that thought swiftly and violently.
Deal with it boldly.
Read the word of God and use it to counter satanic thoughts or images.

When it comes to sexual and impure thoughts, fill your mind with the word of God, Christian books and images as much as possible. The more filled you are with the Holy Spirit, the less space there is to think of filth.
It goes without saying that one needs to be born again and have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ in order to have that authority to bring thoughts into captivity.
Has this post helped you/
Do you agree that thoughts can be controlled by bringing it into captivity?
Lets hear your take on this?

  1. I really love this post because positive thinking is so powerful. Scripture says, "as a man thinks so he is." Our thoughts basically define us. It is important to think positive even when life doesn't bring good things our way. Our thoughts become us. Thanks for sharing, dear.

    1. Awww. My dear, thanks for your kind words.
It can be very hard. But it is important to think positively and counter any thought that is not of God.

  2. Lovely Post... The devil always capitalise on our thoughts and if not guided he will have his way.

    1. Welcome Judith! So happy to have you here.
Of course nah! That's why he is the devil. Any small leeway he has, he takes advantage of, and this includes our thoughts.
We really have to be careful. Those thoughts will surely come. But we should quench it as violently and as quickly as possible.

I would love to know your thoughts on the post you just read.
